A FIRST LOOKThe Moment the Uniform Comes Off

AN EXCERPT FROM THE PROLOGUE

A uniform tells a room something about you before you speak.

It tells people where you belong. It gives them clues about what you have been entrusted to do. Rank, insignia, and position make authority visible.

Then one day the uniform comes off.

The room changes.

No one has to understand where you have been. No one is required to follow because of what is stitched to your shoulders. The credibility that once arrived with your position has to be translated into another language: judgment, influence, trust, business acumen, and the ability to bring people with you when they do not report to you.

I discovered that transition does not erase leadership. It reveals it.
